This brooding, atmospheric tale was probably written in October 1923, and is clearly based upon Lovecraft’s visit to Marblehead, Massachusetts, in December 1922. Although the town of Kingsport was first created in “The Terrible Old Man,” it is only in this story that it is identified with Marblehead. Lovecraft later acknowledged that the story was inspired in part by his reading of Margaret A. Murray’s The Witch-Cult in Western Europe (1921), which conjectured that the European witch-cult had its origin in a pre-Aryan race that was driven underground—a theory now regarded as highly implausible. Lovecraft had also just discovered the work of Arthur Machen, whose tales embody similar conceptions. It first appeared in Weird Tales (January 1925).
